When Kawasaki launched Z1000ST In 1979 they wrote the following headline in the sales brochure: -The legendary Z1000 is "born again" with more power, more style, more refinement-and better than ever with a shaft drive system.

In this way, they played on both the past and the future, because it was important to point out the legacy from the Z1 back in 1972, while at the same time giving the new technology of cardan drive its central place both in the text, and not least through images and an exploded view of the entire motorcycle.

In popular parlance, the Z1000ST was often referred to as "the little Z1300", which referred to its "big brother" Z1300 that came out the same year.

The comparison with the 6-cylinder 1300 cc engine was by no means taken out of thin air, as the two models had a lot in common, both in terms of design and technology.
