BMW new /6 series was shown to the public and press at the IFMA trade fair in Cologne in September 1973, and consisted of the models R60/6, R75/6 and R90/6. The new series was a step up and forward, both in terms of design, power and performance.

With R90/6 offered BMW customers a solid tourer with a touch of sportiness. A low center of gravity, a torquey engine and a good seating position were some of the characteristics of the model. The new model series received a number of upgrades, including modern instrumentation and a 5-speed gearbox. The two largest models also received single disc brakes at the front. As a small curiosity, it can be mentioned that the R90/6 was the world's first series-produced motorcycle with H4 light bulbs as standard.

R90Sport

For those with extra-thick wallets, BMW offered the more exclusive sports version R90Sport. This was the first model from BMW to have a fairing as standard. It also had a larger fuel tank. Double perforated front brake discs, 38 mm Dell `Orto carburetors and a sporty seat with a fastback. With 67 hp, it was good for a whopping 196 km/h.
