Tight wire at Gardermoen Raceway

  • Fredrik Solheim on his Harley-Davidson waiting for the green light.......

When drag racing came to Norway in the 1970s, Norwegians got to experience the world's fastest motorsport. Today, the sport is well established with a number of teams that claim to be at the top of the international scene, and at Gardermoen, which is the main arena in Norway, the horsepower was given free rein this first weekend in September. We're talking high entertainment factor....

  • Ernst Wagner on his home-built "Tally Ho" has been around since the early 70s. The bike is powered by two connected Triumph engines.
  • Tom Erik Sveum drives an old but good Suzuki . With a displacement of 1260 cubic meters, interspersed with various goodies under the cylinder head, it bit off well on the strip

I took a trip to Gardermoen Raceway to see what the classic machines on 2 wheels were good for on the asphalt strip. Experiencing Kawasaki triples from the 70s, trimmed in all bows and edges, pulling the strip on a tight wire is an experience that is difficult to describe, it has to be experienced. The sound and smell from these hysterically fast 2-strokes are, to say the least, intense. And then there were the 4-strokes, equipped with sharp camshafts, huge carburetors, KN filters and turbos. Age is no obstacle, they say, something the audience got to experience to the fullest, because here it went away.

  • Knut Amund Austad in deep concentration, minutes before take-off......

Drag racing is intense, and the experience is short-lived, but intense. If you do drag racing, it's windy, and there's a lot of twisting before it all culminates in a few intense seconds of indescribable acceleration. Here are some impressions from the strip, and not least from the various depots, and if you want to experience this circus live, you can find more info here: www.ndrg.no
