With the XS500, Yamaha tested modern technology, and the 500cc engine was one of the world's first series-produced motorcycles with double overhead camshafts and 4-valve technology.

The design of the XS500 with angles and straight lines is quite different from previous models from Yamaha
The engine was relatively vibration-free for a twin, thanks in large part to the balance shaft. The design was, compared to previous Yamaha models, characterized by straight lines and angles, which stood in stark contrast to both the XS650, TX750 and not least the RD series. The XS500 never became a volume seller, but with the twin Yamaha showed that they knew the art of building advanced engines.
