Yamaha's RD series, which came out in 1973, became very popular, and RD, which stood for Race Developed, became synonymous with fast, easy-to-ride, and smooth-running 2-stroke twins. The largest of these air-cooled models was the RD400, which was a further development of the RD350.

It differed from its predecessor with, among other things, a new and more angular design, and cast rims. The RD400 was in production from 1976-1980.
