“It costs money to be a man, at least if we turn back time,” laughs Per-Arne Heltne, referring to what the Tempoen cost new in 1938. “You know that 700 kroner was a considerable amount at the time, especially for a Sunnmøre resident,” he adds, laughing out loud. I sense a hint of self-irony considering that Per-Arne actually lives in Sunnmøre, more specifically in Volda. Per-Arne’s “Sport” is the model with a Sachs engine that has 2 gears. The Sport was also delivered with an engine from the English Villiers , and it had 3 gears. Per-Arne’s bike has a complete “equipment package” consisting of a bicycle pump, toolbox and hand tools.

Sport, Standard and Luxury

In 1938, Jonas Øglænd's customers could choose from 3 different versions of the 98-cubic-cubic; Sport, Standard and Luxury. The basis of the three models was the simple 2-speed engine from the German Fichtel & Sachs , which was also one of Europe's largest engine manufacturers with 7,000 employees. Øglænd also used engines from " Villiers " which had a factory in Coventry.

Quota on Sachs

The reason why Øglænd used a Villiers engine in addition to Sachs engine was quota regulations on German industrial products. As mentioned, the price of the Sport model was about 700,- kroner. An average annual salary in 1938 was, by comparison, 2830,- kroner, so spending about ¼ of your salary on a motorcycle would mean that it cost "to be a man".
