Kawasaki Z1000ST

Kawasaki1980

Then Kawasaki began production of the Z1000ST in 1979, the idea was to offer customers a sports tourer that was a lighter and more affordable alternative to the supersix Z1300. The Z1000ST was very reminiscent of the 1300cc model in terms of both design and technical solutions, but with a lower price tag.

By the end of the 1970s, the power race was reaching new heights, and Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were fighting fiercely for customers. This meant that models were getting bigger and more powerful. When Honda launched the CBX 1000 in 1978, Kawasaki responded by conjuring up the giant Z1300 in 1979. The model was the biggest, strongest and heaviest that had ever rolled out of the Kawasaki Heavy Industries factory.

With an output of 120 hp in the carburetor version, and 130 hp with fuel injection, and a curb weight of 305 kg, the behemoth was definitely not a bike for inexperienced motorcycle riders. The bike almost became too much of a good thing. Kawasaki took the consequences of this and launched the same year, a slightly smaller version, the Z1000ST, which with only 4 cylinders, but with an almost identical design of the fuel tank, seat and side covers, as well as technical solutions that included, among other things, a cardan drive, gave clear associations to the Z1300.

The Z1000ST, at 276 kilos, was far more manageable. The 1015cc inline-four produced 97 hp, which was more than enough thrust, and with a shaft drive on the rear wheel, it planted its power steadily on the asphalt and with little maintenance. Reduced noise from the drivetrain and the absence of chain spray and worn sprockets, or “teeth” if you will, were appreciated by customers.

And, for the record; ST stands for Shaft Transmission, or shaft drive if you will! The Z1000ST was produced in the period 1979-1980, and competed for customers with Suzuki GS1000 and Honda CB900F in particular.
